Could we have a competition that's like the cosplay contest, but without the cosplay? Anime-related stand-up comedy, dancing, skits and so forth. Probably done "Red Faces" or "Australia's Got Talent"-style so the judges can quickly get rid of any act that's particularly bad or not anime-related enough.

SMASH! Flash Mob, or Mass Prank

So like...there was a cosplay flash mob some time ago right? (Sadly, I couldn't go) Let's do something like that again.

Imagine...a whole bunch of people, a whole crowd even, getting together at a designated time and suddenly breaking out into dance. Or song. Or...something. It'll be just like a musical number, but maybe a little less elaborate. This however, will require a lot of room and prior rehearsals.

Or! We could do a mass prank, whatever that could involve. Maybe something like what the Dollars do.
Maybe something like the "Save the Bunny Girl!" mission. It could be filmed as it's happening and available later to watch on Youtube. /Durarara!! reference.

Actually, that last one kinda sounds like it could be difficult to make.

Hey all

I am a newbie. In the last couple of years got back into comics especially Dr who and torch wood. But have also rediscovered superman and also read One piece and few other manga.
my idea is about helping newbies like myself who will be going for the first time to Smash. i don't know where to start when i enter the building . Do you have people to maybe show newbies around? or is it every man and superhero for themselves.

Live performances on stage?

I was thinking that maybe there could be a few live performances on stage throughout the day at the convention, other than the Maid Dance. One of my ideas would be that we could get some people to perform a SMASH! version of Deadpool's Comic Con song. Here:

By extension, the SMASH! song could also be used in commercials and such.

So...what do you all think?

Cosplay Capture the Flag

Okay, I've heard of events like these planned with TF2 cosplayers (One was supposed to happen at AFO), but sadly not many of them came to fruition. So, I'll just throw this out there.

So, say we get cosplayers split into two teams. They each have 'bases' on either side of the venue that contains their flag. The point is to steal the flag and bring it back to their base. Here's where it gets difficult, other players can 'kill' you by tearing off stickers/Oz tag tags. You 'respawn' by going back to the base and receiving a new one. Players may jump in and out as they wish so they may play for a while and leave for lunch/their panel/to buy stuff if they so wish.

Meanwhile, those running the game will act as an Administrator, and will note captured flags and related news on maybe...I dunno, a Twitter feed or something. There could be designated stations throughout the con where players could check on the Twitter feed.

There's probably a million problems with this (OH&S issues and the like), but I thought it may be fun. It also probably wouldn't be suited to next year's venue, but there's always next time, or some other outside venues or events...

theme + charity

I was reading about a con in another country and part of the ticket price was forwarded to Greenpeace.
Well I just thought it would be nice if we could gather, have fun, and still be doing some good in the process of all that!
So perhaps each year SMASH could choose an organisation, eg. WWF, and the theme would be pandas/black and white.
And of course the theme would be just optional/recommended, on art, cosplay, etc..

I understand that this would limit some of our creativity, and increase ticket prices, but this is really just a suggestion.

SMASH! Merchandise

This came up tangentially in the Premium Tickets idea but is anyone interested in SMASH! merchandise? I'm thinking t-shirts, possibly a hoodie, at first. In future years it could move beyond this to other things but seems like t-shirts are a safe place to start.

What kind of guests are you hoping to see next year? Seiyuu, singers, mangaka, directors? Any specific names?

Mangaka at SMASH! 2011

I think if we were to get a guest next year, it should be a mangaka. This is because VAs have kinda been done before and there are lots of interesting mangaka out there. It would also be much more interesting to hold a panel with someone who creates the content of anime and manga rather than simply performs it.

Dance-Offs?

I've always wanted to see a dance-off at a convention. Everyone gets together and busts a move to either show off their l33t dancing skills, or have fun by dancing the Caramelldansen/Hare Hare Yukai/Danjo/your memetic dance of choice. People can also requests songs to dance to.

...Of course, this assumes there's even room for a big enough dance floor. Anyways, what do you think?

Be strict with your Anti-Bootleg policies next year. You do not want to end up with most of your vendors selling bootleg and counterfeit items. In other words, watch out for vendors such as Hobby Dream.

Tsundere Panel

A panel about tsundere characters. Everyone likes them so why not get together and go through the best aspects of them all. This would need people who know alot about tsundere characters to run, but it would be alot of fun as well.

Maybe have tsundere trivia, or name-that-tsundere hahaha

So while I was going around YouTube and wasting my life away watching videos, I came across the SMASH! 2010 trailer (which I will ashamedly admit I did not see till like a few days back), and seeing the hilarity of it, thought of an idea.

What if all the events that are currently happening at SMASH! had their own promo vid? Some people would only go to a con just to see a certain event, however, whether its worth their money just to see it. How about we all make it interesting and make something like this? :D I'd be happy to do it for my event, the AMV comp. :P It can just be a nice 30 sec vid for it. And then you can just show it all over the net, from FB to forums, twitter, blogs, anywhere!

This idea came to me also after watching the advertisments made by fans for the Hyundai A-league Soccer/Football competition where each team got their own ad.

Evening Events

We've dabbled with extended hours in the past (2008 ran until 8pm, although the Roundhouse being where it was I suspected you all ran to the city to eat food). But evening events are always harder to peg because not everyone can (or wants to) stay around until the very end. With SMASH! being one day we're always interested in ways to fit as many hours of content in as possible, and now that we're at a more centralised location it's easier for people to stay later.

If SMASH! 2011 had an extended running time, what sort of evening events would you be interested in sticking around for? These might be things like concerts, gameshows or quiz-nights, mature-age panels and discussions, etc

A 'Cosplay Area'

I may have suggested this to some people in the past, but considering the move to the Sydney Convention Center for 2011, I'd like to formally suggest the addition of a 'Cosplay Area'.

A problem for attendees, cosplayers and photographers alike is that stopping someone, or being stopped, can create congestion in otherwise tight walkways. This is further aggravated by the increasing amount of people turning up to Smash every year.
Also, it is a cause of frustration that cosplayers have to cloak certain props until the cosplay show itself, therefore not having the opportunity to show off their hard work to attendees beforehand.

Similar to what Comiket has in place (but without the very strict rules they apparently have), the idea behind the Cosplay Area is that it is a designated area where cosplayers and photographers can do their thing without getting in the way of other attendees on the show floor.

It will benefit cosplayers, as they should be allowed to take their over-sized props into the area to pose all the like, and when they want to head back in, they simply cloak it again.
For both photographers and cosplayers, contacts can be exchanged for future projects.
For staff and attendees, crowd control should improve significantly.

In short, it benefits everyone.

conutry wide/ uniform rules @ all cons

i just find it amazing that all the con's have diffent rules for diffent con's and events that are under the same banner ( eg, the big ball on the tursday nite of mainifest). what im trying to say is that all the head's of boards/Convenor's, meet up @ least once a year (like over the summer holdays for exanple) and try and work out a set of uniform rules that will be in use @ all the con's that attend and have a say in the writing for the rules. the only thing that would be flexbly is state law. this is to fix any more issues, and make sure that there isnt a repeat of this years smash's props issues and from the reports that i have heared, a whole secton of last years avcon shut down by the boys and girls in blue. also it would wipe out any confusen on what the rules are for each con and events.

18+ Official After Party

I realise there's been discussion about having a bar at SMASH! but as an alternative perhaps an official 18+ after party. The party would be ticketed (price would be low but used to cover entertainment and nibblies), guests would make an appearance or be invited and encouraged to attend. The party could have nibblies, a DJ and a bar at a separate venue.

Auction for cosplay costume/anime

A auction for people who want to sell their old Cosplay costume they no longer wear it and wish to sell it off to some one who bids the highest.
The money can either go to charity or to the person themself (depends how Smash would organize it)

im only just thinking about it, but it would be cool to have a bar @ smash. it can be run @ the con it self, afterwards or both. but it just gives a new thing to the con, if it to be run after smash have the guess's come and have then join in a chat with some.... minus the stress of the con. i dont know if this idea will ever fly, but im just puting it out there.....

Associated events

I would like to see a few smaller events under the SMASH! banner. Not mini-cons, like Animania does, but events that either have a smaller focus than the broad anime/manga/VG/Japanese culture remit of the main convention, or things that are more tangentially connected (perhaps this is where the "western graphic novels" stuff could come in).

This might include events that take place close to the convention - maybe on the same weekend - like the already-suggested concert and party, but also other events throughout the year. Is there any interest in a model-building convention? Drawing workshops? One thing I'll expand on in another suggestion is a public screening.

Premium Advance Tickets

I like the idea of selling advance tickets that come together with merchandise. So maybe you pay $50 but you get a SMASH! t-shirt or hoodie together with the ticket. That way if people wanted to spend a little bit extra, they could get something special to remember the event.

Post-Convention Concert

After the convention, there could be a concert. It would probably be the case that an extra fee would need to be paid to attend the concert (it would be possible to attend the concert without going to the convention itself). Not sure if people are keen on the idea of having to pay another $30 for the concert if they've already forked out $25 for the event itself (as an example).

Food Vendors
