Food Vendors
  • Maybe we could have japanese and other cafe-like food stalls at SMASH! 2011?
Though, would that be allowed at the convention centre?

  • bring back the paris cake shop, they have been @ smash since the start, and it would be a real shame if they cant come back next year. on the flip side, the town hall would only let there in house food supliers do food related stuff, and we all know how dear that was....

  • I concur with the Paris Cake Shop!

  • guys, for the sake of saving face, bring them back and do what ever apezzing you can do to make them want to come back

  • Dude.

What if Ichi Ban Boshi did mini-ramen for SMASH!...

    That would be AWESOME.

  • ok, sound like its a good idea

  • Oh yes i was wondering where all the food stalls went this year D: other than the maid cafe D: oh wow have someone do a korean food stall would be awesome too i love their spicy chicken/sausage skewers and food. actually Skewers would be an awesome idea since its easy finger food kinda :D and doesnt require much effort to eat (you can hold a stick and eat it while walking around) and TAKOYAKI. YOU CANT GO WRONG WITH THAT :)

  • You definitely can't go wrong with takoyaki, gyoza, edamame and other small food items like that. The only problem is finding and hiring a vendor who'd be able to produce mass amounts of this type of food and keep enough of the food available to handle the demand for it. Not an easy feat, I can assure you.

  • Hontou pancakes were awesome when they came in 2007.

  • Moonshadow, that a good point. the only issue that i have is, i really dont want what happen to me @ last year's animania main. i got some really crooked food, and if wasnt for my prior exp in dealing with food i would of had food posoning, and have a ruined con

  • It's not about appeasing anyone, it's more a matter of venue restrictions. We could bring as many people as we wanted when we were at Roundhouse because they allowed outside food stalls to set up shop on the premises. But a lot of big venues only supply in-house catering services (and these aren't always cheap). If you've been to AVcon you'll notice they have a similar arrangement.

  • that is a good point, and it just so happen's that i went to this year's avcon. i did see that there was a in-house food service, but they were cheap ( as far as prices go). put it this way, the cake shop has been there from the start, it may be seen a friend to smash, and as you move forward your friends move with you (eg: school, uni, adulthood ect) but as you guys move forward, your leaving your friend behind, and unless it was a last resort, its not cool.

  • We love the Paris Cake Shop.

Both Town Hall and SCEC have "No Paris Cake Shop" rules.

    Therefore, no Paris Cake Shop.

    (Sorry, Paris Cake Shop.)

  • The problem is it's just not physically possible for us to always have third party food vendors at SMASH!. We love the people who were with us at the Roundhouse too, but simply put it was a venue restriction which made it not possible for us to invite them back. When you move to a new venue you have to play by their rules.

  • Hopefully we some discussion those are rules that we can get around next year, but honestly it'll take some time before we can know that.

We're definitely taking onboard the fact that people would like to see more food vendors and hopefully we can work out how to do that.

  • guys, you all have good points. the one that made me really think is tom's point. if there were to be 3rd party food vendors, there would have to beput thourgh a tough pre-con vetting sytem, the reason why i say that, is becaus i nearly got sick @ last year's animaina main con. the best thing i can think of is to ask nsw health for there help, in vetting out crooked vendors, and make sure that the food being sold is up to scrach and safe to eat.

  • What ARE the rules for the SCEC in regards to food vendors, anyway? Just out of interest. I'm sure there's some sort of loophole you can take advantage of...

  • The initial position we've been told is that they have caterers that you work with. We're in discussions at the moment given the rather different nature of the event. We'll also be talking with the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority who are in charge of Darling Harbour in case there's the possibility of putting food vendors outside the building.

  • there should definitely be food stalls in smash 2011! The maid cafe was the only place inside where people could get food and it was packed T.T

  • but if they do have food stores (like i have said before) make sure there is a tough pre-con test with the possable help from nsw health so you can weed out the one's that are not up to sratch and selling food @ the same time .

(look @ my post from before)

  • Dude, it doesn't take the NSW Health department to figure out an efficient food store.
What you want to say is if they get food stores, make sure it's a good one.

  • I think matt means places that are credited to handle food correctly.

However, pushing them through a 'pre-con test' is an absolute waste of time. The sheer fact that any given place that SMASH! might bring on board (providing they get the thumbs-up from the venue owners) is allowed to set up shop in the FIRST place is all the 'pre-con testing' you need. Having worked in the food industry, I can assure you that all food establishments are repeatedly visited and evaluated by health inspectors. If they're still allowed to serve food after being evaluated, then it's very safe to assume there will be no problems with them should SMASH! decide to ask them to be a food vendor.

matt, I can see where you're coming from, but honestly, that's a lot of fuss that isn't needed at all. A situation like this is best handled with common sense, not getting NSW Health to waste time by doing something they've most likely done at LEAST six times before being asked to scout out a potential food vendor by SMASH!.

  • Moon, they are great points. the reason why im kicking a stink is, becaus i dont want any one to fall ill @ such a kick-arse con. if it wasnt for the fact that i have worked with food in a past life, i wouldnt of picked that the food i was eating was as crooked as anything @ last years animaina. all im ask is to make sure any and all food is safe to eat, and asking for nsw heath to help out cant hurt, abet that its a tad over the top.

  • *Moonshadow. Please don't shorten my username. I don't call you ma, do I?

It's insanely over the top. I REALLY don't want to have to repeat myself, but for your sake, I will. There is no point asking for any form of help from NSW Health as THEY'VE ALREADY DONE THE SAME THING SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE.
Read that. Now read it again. And read it again for good measure.
You were probably a rare case of someone recieving food poisoning. Guess what? It happens, and sometimes it's unavoidable. I eat at my local Japanese restaurant all the time, and I got food poisoning ONCE (and I've been going there for over three years). Doesn't mean that NSW Health has to intervene and shut them down or anything. Sometimes it happens. 95% of the time it's not the vendor's fault. Chalk it off to a case of bad luck and please, get over it. Did you hear anyone else whinging about getting food poisoning from the same vendor? No. And trust me, if someone DID get food poisoning like you did, they'd have b*tched non-stop about it over on the Animania forums like they do whenever something goes wrong, no matter how insiginificant it is.

  • to be fair, i was shafed by animaina @ same time, and that didnt help @ the time. that is why im a bit on edge about this. but on the filp side, your right, @ the time it was just a sheer fluke that it happen.

(sorry about the mame thing from before)

  • Yeah, well, to be fair, I've had problems with the Animania staff, too, but for different reasons. I wouldn't rely on them, honestly.
It was a sheer fluke that I got food poisoning from my fortnightly beef tataki. I've not gotten it since, and I still eat at the same restaurant. No drama.
