During the Friday bump-in this year Pinin streamed video of their stall being set up. I wasn't able to be at the bump-in and I found myself really excited to see it come together. Maybe for next year SMASH! could stream video? I'm not sure how much bandwidth it would consume to be streaming video but it would let people who weren't able to go have a chance of seeing the fun.
A scheduled live video chat would be awesome the night before, or post up a video to get peopel more excited about the con several weeks before with samples of products that would be sold, a greeting from the maidcafe and execs as well as volunteers (thats always a big attraction), and like a small tour of the actual venue to give people an idea of where things will be :D gives more interaction between the board execs and attendees :) and gives the attendees a more vivid image of what to expect venue wise
i only said 1or maybe 2 live feeds becaus the idea is so new, a small-scale trial like what im saying is a good idea is becaus you can id and fix any bugs that crop up. then @ the next smash in line have a bigger trial, then in the 3rd year, go full scale and then do what you were saying
Yeah I agree with having a few sessions of streaming rather than stream the whole convention. It'll be great for those who cant go (or worse depending on how jealous they get xD) but I think lots of people at home would tune in anyways.
And before the convention, I like the idea of just a video (doesnt have to be live streaming) of how progress is going and what the con's gonna be like. Kinda like an insider look to the con and you can introduce the different panels/stores and where they're located so people will remember where to go.
As for the streaming on the day, its a bit hard to cover everywhere unless you got the equipment and if you do, just get someone to walk around the con and maybe talk to a few storeholders and cosplayers. Maybe even go backstage for events such as the cosplay comp and interview some cosplayers. This is generally for those who are at home, so think about the bigger SMASH attractions and stream those in small sessions ^^
I'm glad you're warm to the stream idea Mike, and thank you for the compliments Matt.
Bandwidth was not a major issue, but it was at the cost of a lower quality video and a large lagtime. That is something to take into consideration.
Avi from Manifest has also welcomed the idea and will be implementing it for his show in a bit over a week's time so I think you can bounce more ideas from seeing how he'll be doing it there.
