i was thinking, why not have one mass tournament that is voted on in the month or so before smsh, and scrap the idea of having many but smaller tournament. in theroy, you wouldnt be thowing so many time and manpower @ the tournament part of smash and put the extra people in other sections that are id as having critcal issus (eg: ushers @ the main stage @ peak times, like the auction ect)
IMO that would prolly annoy a lot of people who'd want to enter different tourneys.
Can we see some arcade machines for Street Fighter?
im only having remarks based on what i had seen @ smash, aganst other cons, but it would be done by a vote on the site in the month or so before smash, so those with the biggest voice would be heared and it would be a majorty rules pick. i can only inmagen the mayham of runing more then one tournament, where if the crowd picks before smash via a voting sytem, it would be in theory more streamline and finsh on time, there for having more free play
There wasn't much mayhem, to be fair. If SMASH! has managed to do it near flawlessly three years in a row, then I say don't fix what ain't broke.
Besides, if it were brought down to a majority rules vote, I'd not be able to enter, say Tekken and Street Fighter, because there's a chance one or both of them wouldn't run under the apparently overwhelming demand to bring SSBB back. On top of that, there are people who go to conventions BECAUSE of their games. For instance, SMASH! is the only Sydney con to run an In The Groove tournament. There would be strong opposition from those who play that specific game if it were suddenly taken away from them, and SMASH! might see a small decline in interest.
If anything, there should be more people brought on as Game staff to manage it. The games department at SMASH! has always been awesome and it'd be a crippling blow to a wedge of the con-going population if only ONE gaming tournament was run.
that is a fair point, the only issue that i can see is that the roster for smash help is caped, eg, this year the cap was only 80 people, over 200 to 300 or more signed up to help out this year alone. the issue here is that they can only have so many on the books @ any one year. it just so happens that games are understaffed to the main event things like main stage. if that had a bigger cap next year then i would agree with you, but if they stay as they are then that would be the only way to go....
Well, we can only hope the exec's decide to allow more people on Games.
I concur with Bamboo. I'd be all up in that $#!+.
Acey and I have been talking about it on msn, and we both would love to run a Pokemon Stadium comp on N64, along with old school Mario Kart on N64 too. So many people enjoyed the Mario Kart last year and asked where it was, plus, everyone loves nintendo 64 and the games are fairly easy.
I agree with what was said about earlier with Tekken and SSF. They are both games that people have told me that they wouldn't play against hard core players.
I also think we need brawl back :] I got many a complaint about that. I can't wait till SMASH '11
Therein lies a small problem. Obviously it's almost impossible to please everyone where the games tournaments are concerned, but there's two parties to worry about- those who play casually, and those who actively seek out tournaments because they're somewhat better than the average. Essentially, one of these parties is going to lose out.
Personally, I think those who have a whinge about it being unfair because they're playing against hardcore players should suck it up. Lots of people use that as an excuse. Even hardcore players masking as newbies use it as an excuse when they lose to someone better than them. As a gamer, you can't get better by just playing against the computer all the time. Going out and playing against real people, regardless of their level of play, is the only way to hone ones' skills.
The only way to fix this is to hold two brackets, like with the old DDR/ITG tournaments. It's unfortunate that a standard ITG tournament for ITG wasn't held, but it's understandable why. I do know, however, that a LOT of people weren't happy with that, but when something's unavoidable you've got to make do with what you have. So at LEAST the Expert tournament ran, which was good, and my god, the finals this year were intense!
Why not SCIII? I could totes bust out my Tira.
A SMASH!-sponsored Starcraft 2 tournament would be awesome. Basically have it a round of 24 or something with most games being played pre-convention, and the semi-finalists and finalists playing on the day with overhand widescreens for people to view.
Unfortunately SC2 doesn't have much to do with Anime or Japan. : (
(but lots of Asians play it, and it is a Korean sport! That's got to count for something.)
I'd suggest a Team Fortress 2 tournament, but it has even less to do with anime or Japan than Starcraft 2. Plus, it'd probably involve more computers. It's called TEAM Fortress after all, but it could also work in a 1 vs 1 setting. (Probably not as well, though)
And while we're arguing about Soul Calibur, why can't we play Soul Calibur IV?
