I can suggest a DJ... don't know what name he goes by anymore but he's good at what he does and doesn't charge through the nose like most DJ's. He lives in the Nowra area and makes frequent trips up to Sydney, and I know for a fact that he can arrange his own transport for his decks, laptop, etc. I'll get some contact details if you like?

Yeah, I figured it'd be a tad too early to even consider it, but at least it's there for future reference. I might hold off a bit and email it in a couple of months.

But I think people like me who are under 18 would feel pretty left out from all of this. I mean if its within a group of friends, then of course I wouldnt mind... but if it was actually a SMASH hosted event, I'd feel pretty left out.
Then again, once I hit 18, I'd probably love the idea. I dont know. Just saying some might feel left out xD

guys, as said in a past topic, why dont we also have a pre-con premium tix only party, but like i have said before. have both partys 18+ and for the pre-con party, those with a premium pass can get in by default. then have say 20 names of thoes who have a normal tix and 18+, have those 20 places fill by having a draw. in the event that the person who is pick dosent want to come, redraw it untill someone takes it. im not sure if this would get up, but it dosent hurt to try.

I personally don't think an 18+ event is suited for an after party to an anime convention.

It could work as a stand alone event though, kinda like what x-7 did a few years back at space..... but due to the crowd, and the fact they did have minors there who weren't allowed to drink, everyone cleared out by like 10:30... which kinda defeated the purpose of having an 18+ anime event since only a small number of people who are interested in the anime can actually stay out late...
Also sucked for me since I arrived at like 10:20 thinking it'd be early..

Maybe it's better not to hold it as an after party. Why not as a sort of advertising event? Meet the guests early or something? Hold it the week beforehand, or even the Friday night before the actual con?

i like the idea mike though as always with alcohol, it adds a LOT of issues.

a 16+ non alcoholic event, could be held in a small hall... have some music going.. non alcoholic drinks (you don't have to drink to have fun). some food. perhaps source it out to a catering company to look after everything like food and drinks and equipment for serving.

- an after con ( a week or month ) Picnic.. or even multiple times through the year.. meet the faces behind SMASH. play some games.. kick a ball... randomly dress up for the fun of it. cosplay in a nice park and have plenty of photos taken. etc etc.

It probably bears mentioning that if the venue is in a bar then SMASH could very possibly broker a deal with the bar whereby they get control and use of the space for free in exchange for guaranteeing a (hopefully modest) bar tab.

That would mean cheaper after-party tix, more money for nibblies, a fun DJ, prizes, etc.

You certainly don't have to drink to have fun but you can get a lot nicer spaces for parties and the like if you make it possible.

I like the idea. (not just cause i am a roaoring alchoholic, okay mostly but not totatally).

I think that you guys are greatly underestimating the amount of 18+ attendees we have. I think this could actually work. Most of the con's have official after parties that are 18+ only, and they are well attended and last well into the wee hours of the morning.

Yes SMASH! is a all ages event, and yes the the avg age is probably under 18, but there is still a fairly significant portion of 18+ attendees as well.

And speaking from experience, I know i am not the only smash worker that would rather go to a bar after pack up rather to a restaurant

MachV, why not do both. have a close party for the smash crew (its for the u18s of the crew) then wrap that up and then go to a pub/bar/club with the rest of the 18+ group and then go party into the wee hours of sunday morring.

guys, this is part of what i was saying in the orignal topic, but i think i didnt make my self clear @ the time and thats what lead it to be a mess (not this topic, but the other one).

another idea would be that you could have the con run in this patten: con, band/other things like a quiz nite to tie in the idea of having a extra thing @ the con, then have a kick-arse 18+ after party.

cause organising two afterthings would be a pain in the arse... would be one or the other... and quite frankly by the time i usually get out of con to head to the after party, it's usually close to midnight

@Matt, It depends on the space but I've done a few shows where we made a guarantee of $500 and got huge amazing spaces with space to dance and music out of it. If that seems like a lot, it's about 3 drinks average for 30 or so people. Obviously some people drink less and some people drink a lot more. A guarantee just means smash pays the excess too so if they only get 2/3 the people they only pay the extra 1/3.

Obviously it scales. $1000 (60 ppl or so) gets you awesome spaces and often food too!
