  • I would like to see a few smaller events under the SMASH! banner. Not mini-cons, like Animania does, but events that either have a smaller focus than the broad anime/manga/VG/Japanese culture remit of the main convention, or things that are more tangentially connected (perhaps this is where the "western graphic novels" stuff could come in).

This might include events that take place close to the convention - maybe on the same weekend - like the already-suggested concert and party, but also other events throughout the year. Is there any interest in a model-building convention? Drawing workshops? One thing I'll expand on in another suggestion is a public screening.

  • This idea is being worked on as we speak :) Model-building and drawing workshops haven't been raised specifically but things along the lines of small events throughout the year are definitely on the agenda.

  • ive heared from a small bird inside of smash that there is something being cooked up from the inside of smash, and its ment to give back to the communty, that has loved smash from the start

  • @matt: Relevance? There's no use saying 'There might be something being organised!' and not elaborate. It's rather frustrating to read.

Either you know what it is, or you don't.

  • Actually Mike, model-building workshops is something that we have been working on. It's also no secret that we ran a very small scale pilot run of a workshop with the volunteers before SMASH!

  • Cheers, Ed.

I'm personally interested in some more academic-oriented things -- perhaps talks at a university on topics like the changing place of Japanese animation and comics in Japanese society or the future of anime.

  • Moonshadow, i know there is something going on, im just not sure if it has the green light from the exec borad of smash

  • @matt: We have a staff debriefing coming up soon (if that's what you mean?), but otherwise I'm not sure what you're talking about, sorry.

  • @Matt: Don't spread knowledge you don't fully know of yourself. If you were on the Exec board yourself, then by all means. But you're not. Please keep what flawed knowledge you have of the inner workings of SMASH! to yourself. Announcing that you know something the general public doesn't know will only serve to seriously p!ss people off. Nobody cares what you think you know- you're not on the committee so your credibility is rather unsound in this specific regard.
And take Rob's word for it- he's actually a part of SMASH! and even he's shot your little revelation down.

Howdy, Stranger!
